Reunited by San Francisco Bay
With war approaching, Tom enters Officer Training in San Francisco, and Ruth pulls out of a commitment to teach school in Nevada to take a job in Berkeley, seeing Tom on the weekends. They marry on November 16, 1917 and head east in December, Tom en route to France.

- Yes we were surprised -- then again we were not surprised to learn you were married -- you see I remember the "Civil War" -- well I wish this horrid war was all done and settled -- I don't like to live in such suspense -- it weries my nerves.
